Tours of Jelgava Prison with Former Prison Employees

The range of tours offered at Jelgava Prison has been expanded to include visits to Jelgava Prison accompanied by former prison employees. The tours will take place on 12 and 26 September at 11:00, and on 16, 21, 23 and 30 September at 15:00.

During the two-hour walk, participants will go behind the walls of Jelgava Prison accompanied by guides who once worked there themselves. They will share personal memories and everyday stories about life and work behind these walls. Visitors will be able to walk around the prison grounds and see its historic buildings while listening not so much to a conventional account of history, but to vivid, first-hand observations and experience-based stories that reveal the everyday life of this place from a different perspective.

The walk will be interesting for anyone who wants to see Jelgava Prison not only as a witness to history, but also through the eyes of someone who spent part of their working life there.

Importantly, this is not a guided historical tour, but a visit accompanied by Guntis and Dzintars, who worked at Jelgava Prison. The stories will therefore be based on their personal experiences and everyday life at the prison.

Jelgava Prison visits will take place on:

  • Saturday, 12 September — 11:00
  • Wednesday, 16 September — 15:00
  • Monday, 21 September — 15:00
  • Wednesday, 23 September — 15:00
  • Saturday, 26 September — 11:00
  • Wednesday, 30 September — 15:00
