The Church of the Dormition of the Holy Mother of God in Jelgava

The church of the Dormition of the Holy Mother of God in Jelgava was blessed on August the 28th 1889 by one of the most renowned orthodox archbishops of Latvia, archbishop Arseniy. The church was built by V. A. Lunsky, at the time – the official architect of the eparchy.

This was the first tent-roof church in the Governorate of Courland. It is distinguished by its stable construction, fine and elegant decoration and beauty. The spatial design of the church strictly follows the canons. The building is cruciform and has a cupola. As the church is small in size, its interior is very homely. The original details of the interior have been preserved: the iconostas, icon frames, candle desk. The prayers have never stopped in this church – this is why when entering one feels special atmosphere sanctified with prayer. The church has successfully survived all the tragic times of the 20th century.
